Durham Furniture began in the late 1890s as a community project to provide work for Durham's youth. A group of entrepreneurs raised more than $10,000 in cash from local residents and obtained an interest-free loan and other concessions from the city council. For $500, the city acquired six acres of land on Lambton Street, which is the current location of Durham Furniture.

Durham Furniture has been producing high quality, long-lasting solid wood furniture since 1899.
